The Klan Rebellion
Shocking the nation, the South has risen again. Buchanan, trapped between the rebels to his south and the Brits to the north, quickly begins to lose control of his nation. The popularity of the Party of Jackson collapses on a national level.

(Author's Note: Remember, blame Buchanan, not me. I'm just the insane immortal Empress of America behind the curtain.)
Buchanan's Address
While history tends to portray James Buchanan as a bit of an incapable idiot, he did make quite the rousing speech to Congress, which was later reprinted in newspaper and handed out as pamphlets on city corners across the loyal cities of America. The speech was actually a great success; even the worst president in American history had his moments.
Oligopoly Structure
In important industries like steel, oligopolies form, ensuring that new methods for production will be discovered faster. Lovely!
The Treaty of Boston,
A century after Britain smoked France in the Seven Years' War, they finalize the spanking of their former child. Signed in British-occupied Boston, British ambassadors meet with American negotiators, and a deal is hammered out:

- America is to respect the borders of the United Kingdom for eternity, and give precedence to the British in future colonial efforts should disputed territory arise.
- America is to retract all influence in Central America excluding Yucatan, where British influence will take root instead.
- In effect, the Monroe Doctrine is null in application to the United Kingdom. In any expeditions to secure more territory for the UK in America, no intervention is to be allowed.
- More embassies and diplomatic ties between the two Anglophone nations are to be formed to prevent future war.
- In exchange for these demands, Britain will abandon its occupation of American territory, and relieve the blockade.

While Americans felt that these demands relegated America to being a vassal to the United Kingdom again, many Brits and Anglo Canadians felt that the British were too light on the savage Americans. In truth, Britain did not wish to see what a terrorist-run Southern state would look like, and so gave America peace in an effort to ensure the stability of world trade.
Tensions Dissipate
In Utah and other Mormom-dominated territories, there had been talks of secession to form a sort of holy theocracy under Mormon God. Thankfully, the notion begins to slowly fade. Deseret is not realized.
Violence in the Colonies
In the Dakota Territory, militant Indians begin to sense weakness and speak of breaking away from the nation, going so far as to ask Britain for help in a possible uprising. Britain says "lol no," and a local militia of American settlers quickly beat the Sioux into submission.
Klan-occupied territory
The 4th Army marches as fast as it can, and the legend of Augustus Beatty grows. Men in his army claim the man has successfully fought off a bear attack, taken down a tribe of Indian screamers with merely a Bowie knife, and had survived a bout with some sort of infectious disease. Beatty, a portly, short fifty-eight year old man, denies these claims.

However, the Klan has already established control in parts of Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina. For fear of them capturing Washington, Beatty makes a beeline for Virginia.
More Klansmen!
Ah, shit
Liberating Virginia
While the Klan has an incredible numerical superiority over Beatty's army of around 16,000 troops, the Klan is poorly equipped and divided; the revolt consists of local chapters, many of whom disagree on just how much they hate the blacks. Beatty uses this to his advantage, and begins to move across Virginia and Maryland.
MORE KLANSMEN
WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT THAT SO MANY PEOPLE WERE RACIST SHITS
A Country Depleted
America, an exhausted nation that recently lost hundreds of thousands lives in a war with Britain that only caused trouble, begins to waver. Despite this, Buchanan orders the creation of more mobilized troops.
Nebraska Granted Statehood!
It's a reward for not being a rebellious fuckhead, Nebraska, enjoy it.
The American Napoleon?
Until this point in history, no man had come closer to seizing absolute control of America than Augustus Beatty did. He had almost universal support in the American North, and his soldiers were practically starting a cult devoted to him. In late November, he even marched through Washington; Congress would have been powerless to stop him from assuming direct control.

Instead, Beatty heads South. There's Klansmen to fuck up!
Florida Granted Statehood
Many in Washington hoped that the incorporation of Florida would earn the nation the support of the remnants of the Florida state government. They were wrong! The Klan continued to operate across the state with impunity.
Tensions in Dissipate!
Small victories!
Associationism
Google tells me that this is "a theory in philosophy or psychology that regards the simple association or co-occurrence of ideas or sensations as the primary basis of meaning, thought, or learning." so thats pretty neat
The End of Reconstruction
Clearly, Reconstruction was an entirely worthless and failed venture. Buchanan, in one of his last great acts of office, decides that it shouldn't continue. Efforts are made to make amends with the South by trying to unite the North and South culturally, while essentially ignoring the plight of the Freedmen, who were being harassed, murdered, and re-enslaved in the Klan's South.
The Imperial Army
A great Klan mob is camped out in Lexington. Beatty's 4th Army, augmented by 30,000 new recruits is, sent in.
Triumph in Lexington!
In a shocking success, the Wade Buckner-led Klansmen are mostly slaughtered by vengeful Northern troops. In a decision that would win him little favor in the South, he turned a blind eye to a Republic-sympathetic mob of Freedmen that set fire to large parts of Lexington and killed numerous White citizens.
South under the Klan's Jackboot
The various small chapters of the Klan established control over much of the South, but they could not organize anything close to a united government. Rather than attempt to root out the problem directly, Beatty instead decides to head west to Missouri, one of the major hubs of the Klan's activity.
The Meiji Restoration
Surprisingly, the Tokugawa Shogunate, controlling Japan for hundreds of years, is overthrown with British aid in 1864. The Emperor finally rules Japan again; a united, westernized Japan.
The Election of 1864
As the nation bleeds, the next election cycle begins. The Democrats, having lost any semblance of unity, shatter and splinter. Buchanan declares his attention to run for office, but this isn't seriously considered.

The Republicans manage to get Augustus Beatty, a national hero, on their ticket. His running mate is Charles Sumner; it doesn't matter. Neither do Beatty's policies.

Oh! And the Workingmen's Party nominates William Sylvis, a 36 year-old trade unionist. He finds limited support in the Northeast.
Wyoming Granted (provisional) statehood!
As the Klan begins to spread northwest, Wyoming is admitted as a state in order to give it a better chance of resisting them.
Utah!
Same with the Mormons.
The Sword of Liberty
Beatty, not bothering to campaigning, heads downriver into the Deep South. He destroyed the Klan in Missouri with minimal losses.
Pluralism!
As the cavalcade of Democratic candidates argue amongst themselves, Charles Sumner calmly won over the few people in the North that needed convincing.
Destroying the Floridian Klan
Florida, proving why it sucks so much, harbors a huge mob of Klansmen. Beatty goes to sort them out.
The Battle of Montgomery
A large mob suddenly rose in Alabama, catching the 4th by surprise. While the mob is quickly dismissed, Beatty suffers 3,500 losses.
Running Away from Beatty
As American troops begin to take back the South, the remaining Klansmen mostly flee north and west, where they act as a prominent thorn in the Republic's side for some time.

Of note: that massive doomstack of 160,000 rebels has been attritioned down to 55,000, and it will eventually disappear altogether. *shrug emoji*
Iron Muzzle-loaded Artillery
We are woefully behind on military tech, something that doubtlessly led to our humiliation against the British. We try to do artillery better.
More debates
(I cut almost all of these out, but look, they ARE happening)
The Second Cuban Revolution
For the second time in about two decades, the Cubans have risen against foreign occupiers. While the Portuguese handed the island back to American authorities after the conclusion of the Maritime War, the islanders stewed in resentment for a year before revolting. Mauricio Gebara, a charismatic merchant, leads a popular revolt against the state government, which is quickly overthrown.

Beatty, hands full with the election and the occupation of the South, puts Cuba on his backburner.
Tensions in the Old World
Word crosses the pond that Old Europe is creaking. Three main revolutions will take place in the upcoming years, changing the face of the continent.
Republicans in Russia!
Surprisingly, a great movement in favor of a republic spreads across Russia. The exhausted Tsarist government can do little to fight the republicans, calling themselves "Jacobins" to call back to the French Revolution.
Klan Terror in the Plains
As the South burns for the second time in a decade, the Klan escapes to the Plains. All of those new states are unable to participate in the election as a result.
Tensions Continue to Dissipate!
Thanks Arizona
The Election of 1864: Results
To the surprise of no one, Augustus Beatty is elected to the presidency in 1864. In order to ensure that he did not win unanimously (only Washington can have that honor), an elector in Pennsylvania casts his vote for William H. Sylvis, which thrills the Workingmen's Party.
Thanks for reading!
President Beatty is in office, but his problems are not nearly over yet. Check back in next time!
